Lower refresh rate = out of range?

I'm on a laptop, and I can't seem to get my 144hz monitor working over hdmi. I've just been using 1280x720 at 120hz for games recently (apparently 144hz does not work over hdmi (I'm using the LG24gm77)), but now I decided to add a custom res through Custom Resolution Utility of 1280x720 at 100hz, and that is all of a sudden "out of range", which makes no sense.

1920x1080 at 120hz does not work as a system wide resolution (even though it shows in Nvidia control panel under scaling, that it is at 120hz (which I cannot change), it is still at 60hz) however in Overwatch I can select 1920x1080 120hz, but the image is blurry, and so it must be running at a lower res even though it states otherwise.

I have come to the conclusion that it might just be the quality of my hdmi cable, but I have also had many problems with external displays and laptops, so from what I know it could be anything.

Thanks for taking the time to read this :) Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yeah, looks like that may be the only way out. Just a pity because I just bought a thunderbolt to usb and ethernet adpater, which I won't be able to use if I get a thunderbolt to display port adapter :( oh well, small issue.
