Hi

I have an awful monitor at the moment and i am going to invest in a new monitor. I have an nvidia graphics card (EVGA SC 1060 6gb). I'm looking for a monitor with around 144hz and 1ms, although i cannot find a monitor with G-sync under $300. I'm not sure if i should just get a free sync monitor as they're much cheaper.

If you have any input for me and can maybe find the best possible monitor it would be an insane amount of help as i have been researching for a long time now and can not decide as there is such a wide variety.

Cheers, George

The best two monitors IMO that meet your requirement of 144Hz are:
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/sbKhP6/asus-mg248q-240-144hz-monitor-mg248q
or
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/zLkj4D/asus-vg278q-270-1920x1080-144hz-monitor-vg278q

One is 27" which is big considering pixel density though you can always push it a bit further back on the desk so that's not much of an issue.

Both support Freesync so you at least have the option if you got an AMD card later.

*Having said all that, personally I'd rather have lower refresh with higher resolution (and IPS panel). 144Hz is great for shooters especially but at this budget you are forced to choose TN (slightly worse color/viewing angles) and lower res.

There are three monitors I found so...
A Freesync monitor will work on an Nvidia card, but the Freesync utility just won't be utilized for controlling Hz based on moving around FPS for smooth gameplay. What's you'd have to do is create a custom Hz setting in the Nvidia control panels (if it allows it to be set) to like 100Hz or whatever where your FPS performance is and lock it there.

For your GPU though you'd need to crank down quality settings to break into three digit FPS territory at 1080p in today's games. You'd only get 144 FPS with 720p resolution setting (and even that's a maybe).

I'll look up monitors but first:
*You do NOT have to run games at 144FPS. Seems like a lot of confusion on that. You have these primary options related to VSYNC:

a) VSYNC ON (should then not drop below 144FPS to avoid stutter)
b) VSYNC OFF (will get screen tear but the higher refresh rate reduces the amount. depends on other factors such as FPS but the result may be minimal observable screen tear)

c) Adaptive VSYNC (toggles VSYNC OFF below 144FPS so if you dip you get screen tear not added stutter)
d) Adaptive VSYNC Half Refresh (caps FPS to 72FPS VSYNC ON)

For 144Hz you'd primarily use:
VSYNC OFF, or
Adaptive VSYNC Half Refresh

For example, in a slower-paced game like TOMB RAIDER I'd aim for maybe 50FPS average (optionally cap the FPS with NVInspector or other tool for more consistent experience), again VSYNC OFF, so the result would likely be minimal screen tearing and less lag/sluggishness than with VSYNC ON at a similar Hz to the FPS rate.

I play pubg and do get in the three digits as i have fiddled around with settings alot. Would i need to have three digits constantly. Would be getting an free sync monitor a better choice overall, and im not too sure i understand the screen tearing too much.

There are three monitors I found so far in that $300 ish price point (2560x1440, 60Hz, IPS, 25" to 27")
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/D7hj4D/acer-monitor-umkg7aa002
and
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/C4Crxr/acer-monitor-umkh7aa001
and

So it's PROS and CONS. Higher refresh rate means many games and of course the desktop (web browsing etc) can look much better. For games the ones most affected are those with smaller HUD/text such as Starcraft 2, CIV5 but it also helps reduce anti-aliasing and other issues in most games even if run at a lower res.

So it's mainly about RESPONSIVENESS (i.e. shooters) with the higher refresh vs better image quality, and sharper, clearer images.

OTHER:
Why the "1ms" requirement anyway?
Not sure if you realize but that's solely about blurring/ghosting of images. It has nothing to do with responsiveness in a game (i.e. input latency). It has to do with how long a pixel changes color and frankly 4ms is fine especially considering you get better color quality with IPS (4ms) vs TN (1ms).

Hi thank you for your time and detailed response. I play PUBG almost everyday and get in the three digit numbers, theres a lot of information you have provided. Are you recommending an 144hz monitor, or the 60hz larger monitors, once reccomended ill talk with my dad about the recommended monitor. after choosing what would i have to run through in my monitor settings, should i turn on v-sync, adaptive v-sync etc.

cheers, George
