Custom resolution to go from 120hz to 144hz

Hi! So I recently got the Acer XFA240 which is a 144hz monitor, but over hdmi it only does 120hz. Now my question is, what if I made a custom resolution for 144hz, even if im on HDMI which is only supposed to do 120hz?

Does your GPU support DisplayPort? If so then just use that cable as it comes with that monitor and you'll be able to utilize the full resolution of the screen and the 144hz.

It may or may not work. I have used two 144 Hz monitors that claim to be limited to 120 Hz over HDMI before. One of them works at 144 Hz over HDMI anyway, the other one really is limited to 120 Hz even if you set a custom resolution.
