Hello all,

I have been browsing around the forums the last week or so, Googling, as well as comparing against the Tom's Hardware GPU Hierarchy Table and the Gaming CPU Performance Table. With that being said, it has been years since I have built a computer - I think the last one I build was back in '07/'08 - I think the i3/i5/i7 line of processors had just been released, if I recall correctly. So needless to say, I am way out of date on what components are the best recommendations these days.

I am comfortable selecting all of the components for a build, but would really like some input on the CPU and GPU components. As said, I referenced against the aforementioned resources, and sure I know which CPU and GPU is more powerful than the next, but I am looking for well-informed input regarding the best combination. Which two will perform with the best synergy? Which combination of the two will minimize any possible bottlenecking?

A little more general information: The computer will be used by both myself and my fiance. I'll use it for gaming (preferably on high settings), and for general use (surfing the interwebz, pr0n viewing, Microsoft Office stuff for work, etc.) - Nothing like rendering, folding, or anything too intense. My fiance may play some games, but if she does, they will be older games. Her main use will be just general use (same as those I listed for me). I am somewhat flexible on budget, but would like to keep the build to about $900 - $1,000 NOT including peripherals or display.

Is it possible to build the tower in that price range that is capable of playing the latest titles on high(ish) settings at a respectable frame rate? Would it be possible at that price to play something like Skyrim on Ultra with a large number of mods, for example?

Thanks for any and all input! If any additional information is needed, just ask!

Ok their some combinations

1. Intel core i3 7100/8100 with GTX 1050 Ti 4GB with 8 GB DDR4 kingston hyper X fury 2133 MHz

2. Intel core i5 7400/8400 with GTX 1060 3gb or GTX 1060 6gb with 16 GB DDR4 2400 MHz G Skill RIP Jaws V.

3. Intel Core i7 7700k/8700k with GTX 1070ti 8GB or GTX 1080ti 11/8Gb with 32GB DDR4 2400MHz
G Skill Trident Z RGB

These are some CPU GPU and RAM combinations for your system according to budget.

Here
no.1 set for gaming at high settings at 45-60FPS.
No. 2 set for Gaming at ultra settings at 60+ FPS
No.3 set for God like Gaming.

Based on the rankings, it looks as though the GTX 1060 3gb still performs better than the GTX 1050 Ti 4gb, correct? Would that mean that a 1060 Ti would perform worse than a regular 1070, or does that not hold true between those two?

Also, with regards to the processors, is it generally agreed that the Coffee Lake processors are going to better performing than the Kaby Lake processors? How do the AMD Ryzen processors stack up as compared? I see a lot of proposed build ideas posted on here using AMD processors instead of the Intels - any particular reason why?

Is it still the general rule of thumb that you would want to use the same number of sticks of RAM as there are processor cores (ie. 4 sticks of RAM for a quad core processor, instead of two bigger sticks of RAM)?

If it is just a cpu / gpu combo for the price i would get the best that you can afford as it will last longer.

the number of sticks of ram depend on the chipset and motherboard. usually 2 sticks (dual channel) is the go even if the motherboard can handle more (4 slots). 8gb ram was fine and still is although more and more games are creeping above 8gb now - i would get 16. 1060 is better than 1050ti.

really you should pair your GPU with your monitor. 1080p (gtx 1060), 1440p (gtx 1070 or 1080) and also consider the refresh rate eg 1080p 144hz you will want a 1070 1440p 144hz gtx1080.
skyrim is easy to run at ultra at 1080p. newer games are quite a bit more demanding. eg witcher 3 is a big step up.

Coffee lake perform better than kaby lake but its motherboards are expensive. So i go with kaby lake if budget build.

And some AMD processors perform better than i3 and i5 of kaby lake. But i7 still beat ryzen 7 in games.

For example.

I3 7100 vs ryzen 3 1300x (ryzen win)

I3 8100 vs ryzen 3 1300x (i3 wins)

I5 7400 vs ryzen 5 1400 (i5 wins in games and ryzen wins in rendering)

I5 8400 vs ryzen 5 1600x (again i tel wins)

And in i7 8700k ryzen 7 1800x (intel wins out)

Here are some ryzen combinations

Ryzen 3 1300x with 8GB kingston hyperx fury 2400Mhz with gtx 1050ti 4gb

Ryzen 5 1500x with 16GB DDR4 G skill rip jaws. 2400MHz with gtx 1060 3gb or 1060 ti 8gb

Ryzen 7 1700 with 32GB DDR4 G skill trident z. With gtx 1070 or 1070 ti.

All with msi B350M Gaming Pro. For these build.

And yes in some games gtx 1060 ti performs better in some games than gtx 1070 (not ti) but some times gtx 1070 wins

And 1070 ti is better than gtx 1060 ti

So I guess the next question is with regards to GPU pricing. Since pricing for any GPU worth getting is so skewed right now, what would a proposed build look like factoring a GPU at normal pricing range? We are not in a huge hurry to build this system, so I am able to wait until GPU pricing comes back into their normal range. Considering that, how would your proposed build change? Or would the rest of the build remain the same, just with a more powerful GPU?

That prompts another question: Are there any big component releases expected in the next couple months that will change the market, so to speak? For instance, is AMD or Intel expected to release any new CPU series in the near future that will alter current pricing? Same question for GPUs, RAM types, etc?

Thanks for all of the input so far - it is much appreciated! And apologies for continuing to fire off so many questions. As I stated before, it has been quite a few years since I have been up to date on the current tech out there.

Ok Here are some combinations

1. Intel core i3 6100 or 7100 with AMD Radeon RX 550 4GB DDR5 or AMD Radeon HD 7870 3GB with 8GB DDR4 RAM.

2. Intel Core i5 7400 or 6400 with
AMD radeon RX560 3GB or 4GB

3. Intel Core i7 7700k or 6700k with Asus radeon strix 580 4GB DDR5.

These are some cheap one that are available. Or you can find more better.
