Can't Decide on Whether to Get a 144Hz TN or 60-70Hz IPS

Hello,

I'm finalizing my PC build and plan to get a monitor around the $200-$250 price range. I'm not being able to decide, however, whether I should get a 144Hz TN screen or a 60-70Hz IPS monitor.

I plan to run on a GTX 1060 6GB and an Intel i5-8400. I play both FPS games (i.e. CSGO) and more demanding RPGs like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Assassin's Creed: Origins.

Is sacrificing the color quality worth it for the 144Hz? Will my PC even be able to run these more demanding games at 144Hz? What are your thoughts, and what are some recommendations you have for either option? Thanks!

I'd go 2560x1080P/75hz/IPS for that system, with your budget you can get a 29" version.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Monitor: LG - 29UM58-P 29.0" 2560x1080 75Hz Monitor ($249.00 @ Amazon)
Total: $249.00
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

All 3 of those games support the 21:9 aspect.

From someone who has had ultra wide IPS and a 1080P/144hz TN monitor (VG248QE) I prefer the ultra wide. Height wise it will be about the same as a 24" 16:9 monitor but if you can find a 34" version within your budget I'd highly recommend getting it as it will give you a bit more immersion.

I'd stumbled upon this monitor earlier on but was reluctant to consider it since I was afraid that games I might decide to play in the future would not support ultrawide. Do most modern games (i.e 2013-14 to present) and new releases support 21:9? Or do a large portion end up with black bars?

Also, do you believe 75Hz, although not as good as 144Hz, is still decent for FPS games? I'm not as addicted as I used to be, but I still play a decent amount of CS:GO and have heard that 144Hz really makes a difference. The 144Hz 1080p monitor I've been considering has been the LG 24GM79G-B.

Out of the lets say roughly 80 PC games I have I've only stumbled into a few that don't natively support 21:9 however some can be modded fairly easy to fit the screen without stretching. The only AAA game that I'm aware of that doesn't support 21:9 and cannot be modded is Overwatch. Blizzard did this purposely to keep the game "fair" but there other games such as Diablo 3 and WoW support 21:9.

I don't see ultra wide fading away any time soon and if anything it may become more normalized as ppl do like the extra screen real estate for productivity as well as gaming. I've also seen quite a few F2P MMO's (BnS/Tera) that support 21:9 if that's something your into.

Are there any slightly smaller versions of the monitor? I have no issues with ultrawide screens, but it'd be perfect if I could decrease my overall expenses by ~$20 dollars. Is there a 27" version? If the one below this is 25", I think I'll stick to ultrawide, though.
