Apologies if this is the incorrect section.

I'm looking to upgrade my current machine, but with the current prices of gpu's and memory, I'm planning on just a step up with a more complete upgrade end of the year-ish. I'd be fine with 1080p for now but would like to bump up to 1440p eventually, however I've been stuck between getting either a slightly higher priced AMD gpu with a lower priced free-sync monitor or a better priced Nvidia card with a higher priced G-Sync monitor. Or just getting a basic 1080p 144mhz 1ms monitor with no sync for my intermediate bump up. So looking for pro's/con's in that regard as well.

Basically my old Radeon 6900 HD isn't able to put out the performance I'm looking for with today's games. On top of which my monitor, which is not for gaming anyway, is dying. So I'm looking at either a GTX 1060 6g or an RX 580 8g. I'd like to be able to hit 100fps on high-max settings on World of Tanks for now.

My current build;
CPU: i7 4790k
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6900
RAM: 16gb DDR3 1333 (I know, I need upgrade here too)
MOBO: ASRock Z97 Extreme4 (I'll need to upgrade this too as it won't take DDR4)

Could I get there with just upgrading my GPU? if so, what's the minimum card that'd do the trick? Let me know if you need any further info. Will look to upgrade MoBo and RAM with later upgade.

Thanks for any help...

Yeah the rest of you of your build is more than capable (should last atleast a few more years), you don't need to change your ram it's fine, higher clocked ram shouldn't make much difference with your cpu. Money is better spent on a better gpu/monitor.

A 1060 will get you about around 90-100fps at 1080p/ultra, 580 around 85-95.

For that kind of fps at 1440p/ultra you'll want a 1070/ti. A 1060 will give you around 65-70fps at this res.
