Hello everyone. if anyone knows of another thread that has a better instance let me know i cant seem to pinpoint anything. so i have a new 1tb wd blue hard drive in my pc. windows 10 intel i7.
samsung ssd for boot and everything now. The drive shows 992mb unallocated space. also shows 992mb of capacity in the devices properties. if anyone could help and give me a quick tip that would be great. or if this sounds like a defective piece that information would also be appreciated.

I am assuming that it is your new 1 TB hdd that is showing small.

What do you see in DiskManagement, how many partitions on the hdd?
If it is new you may need to re-partition the disk as it sounds like this was either not done or not done correctly.

right click on the windows icon and find Disk Management (not Device Manager)
If the Disk management tool does not let you delete/recreate partition then try diskpart.exe from the command line. Just make sure that you select the correct disk before you make any changes.

So what you need to do is find your new disk, it will probably be called disk1 (disk0 will probably be your ssd).

You will probably see a small 1GB partition and a lot of unpartitioned space.

Please confirm

when im in the disk management screen i just see 992mb of unallocated space not 1tb and can only make a simple volume.
i cannot make a partition nor does anything with the word partition show up anywhere on the new disk. diskpart.exe did nothing when i entered it into the command prompt. Guess ill do more digging.

not sure if this will help. but i had the hard drive accepting storage the other day. went to add a picture and it didnt have enough space. i purchased this 1tb hard drive to have a lot of storage so i can put multiple files onto it. now if it default gets 992mb how big of a disk do i have to get. not following what your saying

Try cleaning the drive with diskpart. Execute from elevated command prompt:
  • diskpart
    list disk
    select disk 2
(make sure, you have selected the right disk. Next command removes all data from it.)
    clean
    exit
Check drive capacity in Disk Management.

Isn't this due to hw Windows counts the bytes? 1MB is not 1000KB, it's 1024. 1024 fits in 1.000.000 less times than 1000, so you will see less than the 1000MB you would think fit in 1GB. That is because the drive manufacturer counts in 1000's, not in 1024's. I hope that is clear enough.

No, that's not right.
A 1TB drive would show as 931GB.
This is showing as 992MB

skynetrising thanks for all your help and effort your very knowledgeable but i think i have a white elephant in my pc. so i did what you said in the command prompt and got no where. the images below are what i did before i pressed "enter" to execute the command it is saying there is no disk selected

but yea 992mb isnt 992gb. i understand im not going to get 1tb but at least 500gbs would be acceptable at this point. or ill just scrub it and buy another ssd. and never ever buy western digital ever again. i would like to use this current hard drive though.

went to format the drive and it came up again as 931mb so turns out i formatted it incorrectly. the only options i have when formatting is the drive letter a-z. i chose b guessing that my ssd with boot is drive a. granted thats probably not the case.

No, it's showing as 931GB. Not MB.

And do NOT use A or B as drive letter.YEs, windows will let you. No, you should not.
Those two drive letters are legacy from the olden days, before hard drives.

A was the floppy drive. Only one.
Then systems came with a second floppy drive.
OS on one, your data on the other. A and B.

Then...in came the hard drive. The OS on that got the letter C.
And has been that was for 30 years.

You need to fix the partition size before you can format.

When you ran diskpart and you did a listing, what did you see?

list disk

What disks came up, I suspect your 1TB should be disk 1 and not disk 2.
Please share the output of diskpart "List disk"

Personally, I would do away with that Storage Spaces thing completely.

Just have this 1TB as another drive letter.

As mentioned above, B is not an optimal drive letter to use.
