Your CPU is holding back your GPU performance at 1080p resolution. You need to upgrade to a Ryzen 2 (or Intel Coffee Lake, whatever your preference) and hold on to that GPU. Of course this means a new chip, motherboard, AND memory. I would recommend Ryzen 2 since it will have a much longer upgrade path if you want to start out with a Ryzen 5 budget CPU and then later upgrade to a more powerful one in a couple of years along with a new GPU. Intel's history shows they only support chipset upgrades for about two years at most between generations.

Yes, it's an excellent CPU. And you need DDR4 RAM. There were some Skylake motherboards that allowed you to use low-voltage DDR3 memory, but you don't have that anyway.

That would be a massive upgrade, just pair it with a good aftermarket cooler (Cryorig H7), Z370 motherboard for overclocking and at least 8gb DDR4 RAM.
