Recently Started Having Problems Getting File Explorer To Load File Images Properly

About a month ago I got prompted for an update on Windows 10.
My current version is 1803 / build 17134.48

Since the update I've noticed that file explorer hasn't been loading my files the way it used to. I have various folder with video files in the "Large Icon" viewing option. They used to load fully with relative speed. Now when I open File Explorer they load on the first page I view, but if I continue to open pages they take longer to load, and eventually load for a LONG time only to end up with the file type icon. If I continue to look up pagers beyond that they load for longer and longer.

If I open the files they appear to run properly (though occasionally file explorer freezes when I try), but for the sake of quickly identifying the file I'm looking for it's a problem. I'm also concerned what it might mean for the rest of my PCs operations. That perhaps something is damaged and could lead to further problems. As far as I know, my PC is virus/malware free, software/malware updated, and so on. The only thing I can think might have caused this is that update...

If only some of the image icons are showing up, it sounds like the thumbnail cache was corrupted. Try deleting it or disabling/re-eabling it. That will force Windows to re-generate the cache, and hopefully your video preview images will load correctly this time.

That could indicate your hard drive is beginning to fail. Run CrystalDiskInfo to see if the SMART stats for your drive report any problems.

You may also want to try re-installing whatever video codec pack you're using (e.g. K-Lite or CCCP).

I tried refreshing the thumbnail cache... no luck. I have software to monitor my drives (there are several). The O.S. is running on an SSD. All of my drives are reportedly healthy.

The majority of the files are .mp4, but the issue also effects .gif and other files apparently. No effect on folders... just reading media thumbnails I guess. I've read a suggestion to refresh the files index. I'm going to try that next.
