1080p Monitor Dead. Need a new one ASAP! 1440p preferred!

Long story short, my 1080p monitor is dead. I'm still using a 670 graphics card (was holding out for price drops and the next gen release), and I wanted to wait on a new monitor until I got a new graphics card. That's no longer an option for me (because my backup 1024x768 monitor sucks!).

I'm interested in a 1440p monitor. Can my 670 handle that kind of monitor (or would I be forced to run at a lower resolution)? Is going for a G-Sync monitor worth it? Price isn't an issue, but I rather keep it under $500, if possible. Amazon and Newegg preferred. Any recommendations?

Here is a selection of 1440P gaming monitors. I limited it to 24 - 29" and included g-sync.

I would recommend the ASUS ROG PG278QR 27" 165Hz WQHD 2560x1440 NVIDIA G-Sync Monitor. Another option is the Acer Predator XB271HU 27" WQHD IPS G-Sync Monitor.

As to your other questions, the GTX 670 is rather dated. You will probably not have access to the G-Sync until you replace your graphics card. But the resolution goes up to 4096x2160. I would use...

If you are going to spend this much on a monitor, I would definitely get G-Sync (for Nvidia GPU's).

Thanks for the reply.

I see two Acer Predators listed on Newegg. I'm assuming the cheaper one is TN and the other is IPS. Is the IPS worth the extra cash?

Is there a huge benefit with G-Sync or would I be OK with saving some $$$ and going for a monitor without it? How much of a frames hit do you think I would take running 1440p vs 1080p on my 670? Just curious.

And yes, the 670 is quite dated. I would have upgraded to the 1080 TI recently, but I'm not paying Bitcoin craze prices lol. Of course card prices are coming down currently, but we are so close to the next gen that I will wait and buy then.

Thanks. Not terrible, but I suppose I can always downgrade the resolution if it impacts my gaming until the next gen cards are released.

I edited my above reply right as you were posting. Would you be able to answer my question regarding TN vs IPS?

IPS monitors in general provide a better display for watching movies. But there is a reason that they are rarely seen in gaming monitors. The gray to gray response time is much higher than TNN monitors. Also the brightness in cd/m2 is generally lower. With the two monitors I recommended, the response time is low, but the response time on other lower quality IPS monitors is 10 - 20 ms (or higher).

Years ago I had my heart set on a Dell IPS monitor right up until I read the spec's.

I don't have any experience with that monitor. It is on the Newegg page that I linked above. It wasn't rated very well.

I have a ASUS VG248QE 144 Hz gaming monitor. It was a very highly recommended gaming monitor for years and it is a TNN monitor (G-Sync ready but not installed). I like it, but I would probably get the monitor that I recommended if buying a new gaming monitor today (and had the money available).

I wouldn't put IPS vs TNN as a priority when buying a gaming monitor. I have the system connected to my UHD 4k TV for watching video (and general computing & browsing).
