How could I continue to use my laptop if the screen died?

My laptop screen has dead pixels and it seems to be getting worse.
I have a lot on my laptop and it works quite well so I would still like to be able to use it if the screen degrades further.
I am using Windows 10.
Upon research it seems viable to connect a monitor using VGA and then set as primary, but I am not aware of what would happen if say I had to completely reinstall my OS and the whole original screen was either dead or had been removed while another monitor was connected via VGA.

Would I still be able to use the second monitor as the primary monitor and if so are there any conditions required to do this?

Without any issue at all, hook it up with vga, press windows key ( between ctrl and alt) + P key or in display settings ( right click on desktop and screen or display properties then set your external as primary) and youre good to go, no need to reinstall anything.
