2560x1080P/75hz/IPS. It's not as cheap as the above option however I have it and absolutely love it for gaming. Having that extra peripheral vision gives a better gaming experience and for the titles that don't support 21:9 you'll just have black bars but I've only seen a handful of newer games that don't support it. Overwatch is one of those titles but other Blizzard games such as WoW and Diablo 3 do support it...
for the most part no! Depends on what res and what in game settings and more importantly what game!?

List your full PC specs and monitor resolution and what games you are hoping to play.

If for example you have a 1080p 144hz monitor, there is no chance of 144FPS. 'Maybe' CSGO might 144FPS at 1080p with that card. But unless you have a decent CPU, maybe not. As for other games, or anything new and demanding like BF1, COD WW2, not a chance.

You would need to playing on 1366 X 768 with everything on low, then maybe you would get 144hz in some more games. But no monitor with that res is 144hz anyway.

Because it's a weak GPU. you need to be looking at a GTX1070 or above for 1080p 144hz/FPS with most games, and with anything more demanding like BF1 and newer AAA games, you will need a 1080/ti and a really good CPU like an 8600/8700k OC'ed to push the GPU's to 144hz. At 1080p the CPU is the bottleneck, so a top CPU/GPU is needed to push 144hz in all games at a sustained rate.

My cpu is i5 8400, so should I upgrade my gpu to 1060? or just patiently wait for the 11 series?

or should I grab the 100 hz?

Your not wasting your money, your monitor should be your least upgraded part so getting something even if you can't fully utilize it is still justifiable when you get a better GPU. I'd say go for it and just turn down the settings per the game, for something like CSGO I'd turn it down significantly to get the higher FPS but for a single player game I'd keep the settings on the higher side and just use 75-100 FPS.

Personally I'd take 2560x1080P/75hz/IPS over a 1080P/144hz TN panel any day.

The i5 8400 is a great CPU, once you go past 1080p, so Wildcards suggestion of a higher res/lower hz monitor isn't a bad idea at all. The 1060 is just gonna fall short somewhat. But as i said, it's game dependant and in game settings too. Playing CSGO at low res/ low settings and playing BF1 at low res/ lowsettings are two completely different things.

Given you've told us you've an 8400, i'd say get a 1070/ti, the similar monitor to the one Wildcard suggested and be happy out gaming.

There is a cheaper version that is 25" but avoid it as vertically it will be way to small, the 29" versions are about the same height as a 16:9 24" monitor.
