I have two monitors, one connected to my pc via a hdmi cable and one with a vga. The white one in the picture is connected with the hdmi. I want to get another of the black monitor but i'm holding off until I know I can get dual screen to work.

It's plugged in properly with the vga cable but my pc is not detecting it and I've tried a lot of different things. Is there something I'm missing here? I've provided pictures of everything set up.

Solution
Most new graphics cards don't output an analog VGA signal anymore. That's why the simple DVI to VGA adapter doesn't work for you. You need an "active" DVI to VGA converter. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/CableDeconn-Active-FeMale-Adapter-Converter/dp/B01DW2BJWU/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1530649427&sr=8-6&keywords=dvi-d+to+vga+adapter. This converts the DVI digital video signal to an analog VGA video signal.

It's an adaptor because the port on the pc is a dvi port
