DD WRT router for smart TV (VPN netflix)

Need DD WRT router to put smart TV behind VPN netflix 4k

Priority is price

Smart TV would be the only device connected through Ethernet

For 4K streaming, you are going to need an above average router to have enough CPU to have a VPN with enough bandwidth. Per this page -- https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306 you need 25Mbit bandwidth. If you are wired only, the MikroTik HEX can do 50Mbit IPSEC VPN -- https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-reviews/33140-microtik-rb750gr3-hex-router-reviewed It is around $50.

A couple of things to be aware of.

First and most importantly netflix blocks most vpn providers, they even block many of the hosting sites to prevent people from running private vpn servers.

You will find no end of posts of the type "works for me with xxxx vpn". You need to be suspect of any of these posts. Netflix every few months will go though and block new blocks of ip addresses. The only method that they appear to not be willing to block is if you use a large hosting service like google or amazon. They would end up like russia having to block many major providers just to get to vpn users they do not like.

A second issue is you want to use a vpn that runs IPSEC and not Openvpn. The overhead in openvpn is huge compared to ipsec. It takes much less of the router cpu to run ipsec rather than openvpn. Many vpn providers allow IPSEC.

Still before you get to far into this project I would test using software vpn clients on a PC that netflix is not blocking the vpn provider you are using.
