Using an iMac as a second display for Windows 10 via software

So atm I currently have an old 2011 iMac not being used and i would like to be able to use it as a second monitor for my Windows 10 laptop. Is there software that can be used (free or paid) to allow me to extend my windows 10 desktop to the iMac as a second monitor.

I have tried target display mode with a HDMI (output from laptop) to Thunderbolt (input to iMac) cable with no results. Am i possibly doing it wrong? is there an incompatibility?

I'll be constantly monitoring this thread so if you need any info post it here.

I'm not 100% sure on an old iMac, but most PC's don't have a video input. So, there's no way to use it as a monitor.
