Is this build worth it??

Hi all,

I'm a first timer preparing to order parts for my first build (I've been saving up for about 2 years and just don't want anything to go wrong during my build). This build will be dedicated towards my university studies, mainly for working with CAD and rendering.

I just wanted to verify the parts I'm about to purchase all work together (I used the online PC Part Picker). Also, am I wasting money and 'over-killing' anything (I'm not sure whether the power supply is too high)? Lastly, do I need the M.2 SSD, does this replace the current storage I have below?

Here is my parts list:

- CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core Processor
- CPU Cooler: Cooler Master MasterAir MA610P
- Motherboard: Asus STRIX Z370-E Gaming ATX Motherboard
- Graphics Card: Leadtek Nvidia Quadro P2000 Workstation Card
- Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB)
- Storage: Samsung - 860 Evo 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
- Power Supply: EVGA - Supernova G2 850W 80+ Gold
- Case: I'm still deciding an a case at the moment.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! :) Thanks!!

You PSU is way overkill for your setup since P2000 is only 75W GPU. Add the rest of the system to it at 200W or so and you're looking 275W. Even 550W PSU would be more than enough, e.g Seasonic Focus+ 550,

As far as SSD goes, with M.2 NVMe drive, you'll get about 10x faster read/write speeds over 2.5" SSD or M.2 ACHI SSD. Other than that, there's no other benefit,

Right, I'll probably the power supply then. Thanks for that Aeacus!

You do realize that choosing a PC case is completely a personal choice and you can't say which PC case OP must buy, right?

Just because you love NZXT H500 case doesn't mean everybody does. I, for example, find it way too plain and tasteless, not to mention huge restriction in airflow due to the solid front panel.

Also, care to explain to OP why he should go with Ryzen build instead of his initial Intel build? Or do you think that everybody should take only your word for it and accept it at face value?

ok, should have explained it better.

for cad, higher clock n ipc gives an edge to 8700k. but only a bit. we know that 2700X dumpsters the 8700k in rendering. R7 is just better value and bang/buck in this work case scenario. thats y i suggested the 2700X

regarding case, OP mentioned he was still deciding. i gave a suggestion. its a good case at 70 bucks.

Well, if someone would say to me: "get a xxx case", it doesn't sound like a suggestion. Here's how suggestion looks like:

@OP
Without knowing your taste in PC cases, it's very hard to suggest which case to go for. But you can consider Corsair Spec-04 TG (black/red) at $59,

As far as my own preference with PC cases go, i like full-tower ATX cases. I have Corsair 760T v2 black in use with my Skylake build (full specs with pics in my sig), which has lots of internal space, plenty of 3.25" external bays, great cable management, superb airflow, compatibility with Demciflex custom filters, great looking, and the list goes on and on.

Corsair 760T V2 (comes in as black or white),

The list you have above, minus the case, and selecting one of the available memory speeds for the brand/model that you specified, I came up with this: (Using a 550W PSU instead of 850, for the reasons posted earlier by Aeacus)
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qnkWzY

Keeping to within that budget, I swapped out for an R7 2700X and a B450 MB from ASUS, and swapped to an NVMe M.2 drive.

This still leaves about $100 of 'found' money to select your own case. (You can get a good for less than this.)

Good luck with University.

Seems like a pretty great build, I’d definitely keep the i7 8700k, amazing chip, as for the case I would suggest the h500, easy to build in and decent airflow with tempered glass for 70$. Good luck man!
