So I need a bit of help deciding which monitor I should get for my rig, which is a GTX 1070 graphics card and a I7 7700k processor.

So what I really want is a stable framrate around 144hz on most games I play, which is mostly games like Overwatch and Rainbow Siege but also heavy games like Witcher 3. I also definitely want g-sync.

My budget is absolutely tops 800€, would prefer something like 500-600€.

What I really can't decide on is if I should get 1080p or 1440p, is it worth lowering settings on heavy games and playing with 1440p or should I stick with 1080p and play with high settings?

Thanks in advance.

Solution
Let us gather some thought:
7700k for most cases is more than enough to get stable high fps (above 60fps). FPS influence from cpu is not really resolution dependent. higher res will put more stress on the GPU side.
On that USD800 budget, you should be able to afford 27" 1440p 144/165hz IPS display with GSync. I would get such monitor
Up to here, the idea about going 27" 1440p 144/165Hz IPS display with Gsync is the best.
Going 1440p will give also some extra benefit like more pixel real estate for work.

Now, take a look at your GTX1070. For Witcher 3 as example, 1070 will struggle on 1440p only to keep 60 FPS, if you maxed out and activated everything and if you even use graphic mods. In order to have stable 60fps or more on 1440p, you...

In order to have stable 60fps or more on 1440p, you have to reduce and deactivate some settings. GSync will help smoothing those instable lower fps.
If you want to maxed everything but wanna have really high fps on 1440p, you will have to look at 1080ti.

In short, 1440p has many benefit but 1070 is not really meant for maxed out 1440p.

People tend to keep (at least I do) monitors longer than they keep the PC. I would not hesitate investing on better monitor.

After all of those thoughts, I would rather get 27" 1440p 144/165hz IPS monitor with Gsync rather than keeping any 1080p monitor, if I have the money. I would rather reduce in game setting too.

If you hover your mouse pointer over my avatar, you should be able to see my current complete system. you will find Acer XB270HU :)
So, I had that struggles like you had 2-3 years ago and you see how my decision looked like :)
I bought XB270HU even as I was still using a single GTX970. Went for 2xGTX970 afterwards and went for GTX1080. I wanted to go for 1080ti but it not yet available as I bought my 1080 and now, I just wanna hang on to my 1080.

Solution

That's totally up to you. Either way you are getting a newer better monitor. When you upgrade your GPU later for example then you're monitor will be ready to handle anything you want to throw at it.

Thanks for such an indepth answer!

Your probably right in investing in a 1440p monitor even if i'm not going to upgrade my grapichs card anytime soon, cause most of the games i play i can have a high avrage fps with 1440p and max and with the occasional heavy game i can just lower the settings.
