I'm building a new rig. I started with the monitor. Dell Gaming Monitor S2417DG YNY1D 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit TN with G-SYNC, QHD 2560 x 1440, 165Hz Refresh Rate, 1ms Response Time, 16:9 Aspect Ratio.

My question is will I be able to turn down the settings in case my R9 390X has trouble running games for a short time til I get the rest of my new rig built.

Eventually I'll be building an Intel Core i7-8700K with a GTX 1080 or 1080 TI I'll be using the PSU and SSD from my old rig

I see no reason why not. While you won't be able to use the Gsync function and your still limited by frame rate, which you are right this second anyways in games, the monitor will still work. Should be a great build enjoy.

Yeah very much my point. The OP will need to use Vsync for smooth frame rates in the mean time and pick a refresh rate their setup can handle. Regardless it will work until they upgrade the GPU .
