I am about to build a new desktop and was planning on using the SSD from my laptop as the primary (only) drive in the desktop. The laptop was Windows 7, the desktop will be Windows 10.

Is there anything I need to do to the SSD before I take it out of the laptop and try to install Windows 10 in the desktop? I was going to back up files on an external hard drive, but I've only ever done a clean install of Windows on a new drive. I was kind of hoping that Windows knows what to do with itself and will keep my files / games intact.

A drive going in to a new system with a different OS?
Absolutely back up your data. Unlikely you will be able to keep anything.

A full wipe and clean install is needed here.
