So I've about the same rig for the past 4 years and I'm looking to upgrade the gpu and monitor. What I have now is a gtx 770, 24" asus 1080p 60hz monitor, gtx 770, and an i5 4670k that's been good to me (OC at 4.4 since day 1).

So I been reading forums and watching reviews and I heard a lot about some games being CPU demanding etc and how a CPU can bottleneck your graphics performance. Hearing all this made me think twice about going for the gtx 1080.

Ultimately I'd like to get a 1440p 144hz monitor with a gtx 1070, however my question is how much would my CPU hold me back? Can I get all or most of the performance out of the gtx 1070/1440p combo?

If the CPU is too much of a bottleneck then the other alternative would be a 1080p monitor at 144hz, and with that I think a gtx 1060 (6gb version) can handle it.

I think your fine with the existing CPU you have mate. Sure, your PC would perform better with a newer architecture and CPU but you will see a significant improvement with a direct GPU switch to a 1070 from a 770 !!! Enjoy the upgrade, you should be able to play something better than minesweeper :)

And a 1070 is a decent GPU for a 1440p 144Hz monitor, you wont be able to play Ultra on AAA games but you will be able to on Medium settings. If you can scrap together for a 1070ti it will be closer to the mark, 1080 even better

Very few games use more than 4 cores so the CPU will hold up with today's games, not sure how much longer though :)
