Can I use a drive with Pending Sector and Uncorrectable Sector issues?

Hi all,

I have a Seagate ST3000DM001 3TB drive that I pulled from a raid5 array when it was causing issues. (these drives are notorious for that). SMART now gives a "caution" with Current Pending and Uncorrectable Sector counts (Raw values for both are 0x08). The question is, is it safe to reformat, update firmware on the drive (seagate apparently released an update to fix the issues they have in raid arrays) and redeploy it? Or, given the cautions, should I dump it?

Thanks in advance...

Pending sectors have to be resolved first.
Then after they have been cleared, depending on relocated sectors count, you can decide to reuse the drive or not.

But those issues, you mentioned, most likely will persist.

@luckycharms, the last time I checked, Seagate still had not fixed a bug that prevented a particular firmware update from working on ANY suitable candidate. If you do manage to download the ISO file, let me know and I'll tell you if it's the one that I reported to Seagate many years ago.
