Is there a Badge for Ban-hammering. It seems that the Tom's hardware community moderators are excessive in there banning users for any slight, perceived provocation.
I've always found the mods here to be fairly reasonable, there are a few ( as there are in any walk of life) that are a bit terse and can be a bit of a jobsworth. You generally only get banned for flagrantly ignoreing the forum rules or just generally being a moron or just down right rude.
Bans are the last resport - the fewer folks we ban, the better the forum runs. The fact is, it's the disruptive element that have accounts banned and frequently, after a Private Message sugegsting a change in behaviour.
A lot of bans are for posting Commercial Spam and that makes the forum safer for all the members. Some of the links go straight to downloads and we have to test them.
No badges and voluntary - that's the reality of it. Do you know someone who thinks they were banned unfairly?
Overall, we actually seriously dislike banning people.
And almost every long term ban is discussed in depth with other Moderators.
Only in cases of egregious violations would a Moderator take unilateral action.
Do you have any specific examples of this type of action?

Judging by the fact that this is one of two posts by joeblow19800202, and that this account was created today, yet he knows about badges, I'm going to guess that Joe's the one who feels unfairly banned, albeit another account, and that this new account was created to complain about it.

Bans are used sparingly and only with just cause. Mods simply enforce the rules and are volunteers.
When the possibility of a ban arises, the moderation team will often communicate a significant amount before an action is taken (and well documented). Only when a clearly egregious action takes place, do mods act unilaterally.
