So, I thought adding RAM would be cheap and easy. I was wrong. The P5Q Pro Turbo can take up to 16GB of DDR2 RAM. I was trying to go the full 16 GB but it seems almost impossible. RAM options that fit are expensive and hard to find.

This PC currently has 2 x 2GB Corsair XMS2 CM2X2048-6400C5 DDR2 memory [4 GB total]. I am running Win 10 64-bit. If I upgrade the RAM and add an SSD, I think I can get at least another year or two out of it, especially since I don't do any gaming.

I know mixing and matching RAM is a no-no and it seems almost impossible to go to the max of 16 GB RAM. 8 GB is still doubling what I have. Should I get this rather expensive https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-PC2-6400-240-Pin-Channel-Desktop/dp/B0027P9C9G ? It is the exact same RAM I have installed now, the only difference that the current 4 GB RAM in my PC have been in use since 2011.

Are there any better options that won't break the bank?

Thanks!

Why not look for a used kit of 4x2gb sticks? Might be the same price or less ...

Like,

although shipping costs extra as said.

Do think that with ddr2 you have more lenience so might well be that the new kit will work with your old ram,but the only way to know is testing. Amazon does seem to have a 30 day return period if it doesn't.

I believe you cannon mix and match RAM. Also, I think I have read on here that memory and storage are two things you should never buy used or factory refurbished. Thanks for the idea, though.

If you read stuff here they will tell you that you can't buy anything used, they will always push for new.

Look at some Tech Yes City vids, the guy lives partly of used. He could not do that if all used is just crap. And the newer you get with ram, mean ddr3/ddr4 the more you probably wil have problems with mixing ram,but that's my opinion.

You come with a question and when you get an answer about mixing ram you take the whole point away from your question,if you really believe you can't mix ram why ask?
