My Asus ROG pg279q flickers black every 5 seconds or so after going beyond 85 hz. I tried turning on and off g sync which doesn't help. Is this a easy software fix or am I going to have to RMA it?

I also have the PG279Q. Had it for over a year now and it has never done anything like that. Is this a new monitor or did it just start happening out of the blue? Are you using the amphenol display port cable that should've came with the monitor? GPU drivers are installed? There is also a driver for that monitor you may want to try, doubtful it will solve that however.

Thanks for responding fast. Yes this is a new monitor i got it about 3 weeks ago. I'm using a display port of of Amazon. I also installed the latest GPU drivers. I will try a different DP cable and try the drivers. The drivers are in zip format. Do I extract them with winrar? If so how do I install them to the monitor? Sorry not tech savvy.

Update. Guess who the culprit was? The DP cable. I switched to the DP cable included in the box turned on g-sync, now everything works great. Thanks for the help. THe DP cable I bought off of amazon was not g-sync compatible and is a probably not certified.

There you go, lots of bad DP cables out there. The one that came with my PG279Q is DP certified and amphenol is a pretty well known cable manufacturer.

Yes you extract the contents with winrar to a new folder. Linked an install guide for it below.
