Hi there , I’ve bought a pc for the son . It has a 2079rtx card inside , however he has this monitor ASU’s mg28u ... it is 4K .... but it’s refresh rate is just 68 .... will this mean his fps on fortnite etc will be stuck at 68 ?? Do I require a new monitor ? Any advice extremely welcome

Solution
That monitor is 60hz. That means it can change the pixels a maximum of 60 times per second. For gaming that means that the max fps will be 60 that the monitor can support. Due to bandwidth, almost all 4k panels are 60hz. There are a couple that are 144hz, but they are very expensive.

If he wants higher fps, then you will need a new monitor. The 2070 would pair nicely with a 1440p/144hz monitor. The resolution would be higher than HD but will also have the higher refresh rate. It is the best of both worlds.

I would go with this. That is about as cheap as you are going to be able to get one. You could drop to a 1080p/144hz monitor, but you would be wasting a bit of the power of the 2070.

Thanks very much , do I not require gsync ... does the gpu even support gsync?

Sorry if these are a bit pathetic questions , I just don’t have a clue . The lad is switching over to a pc and it’s the first time dealing with such things

hi there,

yes the two main features of monitors are their resolution (1080p, 1440p or 4k) and refresh rate (hz 60, 75, 100, 120, 140, 165, 240). -the third would be inputlag/response time (1-5ms preferred for fps).
the higher the resolution the harder it is for the graphics card is required to work, and the same goes for its refresh rate (hz).

another note is even if the graphics card is rendering more than the hz of the monitor the monitor can't show them beyond it's hz top end.

This monitor will give sharp images but it isn't really made for FPS (frames per second) shooter games like fortnight (it is nice for immersive slower games) - . for FPS like fortnight generally people would prefer to use a 1080p 144hz or 1440p 144hz monitor with low input lag.

There are plenty of people gaming in FPS shooters with 60hz panels, so you don't "require" a new monitor (it also has a good response time), It is however much easier / more fluid and fun on a higher refresh rate monitor though.

If you are going to buy one, perhaps a cheap 1080p 144hz would do the trick.

or here is a 1440p 144hz

you'll need to get a display port cable if you haven't got one.

nvidia has just released drivers for gsync to work on freesync monitors. it isn't guaranteed but it appears most are working ok.

That monitor has free sync which you can now use. It is a nice feature to have and I would get a monitor that has it.

Until last week, only Nividia cards worked with gsync and AMD cards work with freesync. But last week Nvidia released a driver that allows Nvidia GPUs to work on freesync. This is good because free sync is much cheaper than gsync. Since it is a nice feature, I would get a monitor with free sync.

What gsync/free sync does is matches the monitor's refresh rate with the output fps of the GPU with very little lag. What that means is that the picture is very smooth with no tearing, even at lower fps.
