Hello,

I’d very much appreciate people’s inputs/advise/recommendations. This will be my first build complete from scratch, I’ve only ever upgraded bits and pieces before. I haven’t even done much of that in the past couple of years, so I’ve been having to do a lot of reading online. I think I’m getting there, but wanted some advise, and to make sure it all looks good (just in case I’ve overlooked something).

It’s a complete new build – the only things I already have are my keyboard and my speakers.

Approximate Purchase Date: This coming week

Budget Range: £1000-£1,100

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, surfing the internet, watching movies

Are you buying a monitor: Yes

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: any UK ones

Location: London, UK

Overclocking: Yes

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: Aiming at 1920x1080 or 1920x1200

Additional Comments: I would like a quiet PC. In terms of games, at the moment I'm thinking Diablo 3 and Skyrim

Why Are You Upgrading: Currently PC is over 5 years old, and tends to restart randomly

PCPartPicker Build: http://pcpartpicker.com/uk/p/cFrk

CPU, Intel Core i5-3570K
CPU Cooler, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

Motherboard, Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H (ATX)

Video Card, AMD Radeon HD7850
This is pushing my budget a bit, but seems to be worth it from what I’ve read online. Not sure which exact one to go for though, any suggestions (is any known to be any quieter?)

Memory, Corsair Vengence or G.Skill Ripjaws, 2x4GB
From what i’ve read online 8GB of RAM should be plenty, and these two brands seem to be fairly well recommended. Will I need ‘low profile’ RAM (considering CPU cooler) or should I be okay with the normal stuff?

Storage
1) Samsung 830 Series 128GB 2.5” SDD
2)Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5” HDD

Optical Drive, Sony AD-7261S-0B DVD/CD Writer
From what I read online, any drive seems to be as good as any other really?

Case, Fractal Design Define R3 ATX Mid-Tower

Power supply, Corsair 650W ATX12V / EPS12V? Help?
This is where I really need advice – 500/600/650W? Corsair is the only name I really know. How much should I be looking to spend on a PSU? Can I go cheaper than this one (which is about £80)? Is there any low-noise ones I should be considering?

OS, Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

Monitor, Dell UltraSharp U2312HM 23"
There doesn’t seem to be as much out there in terms of reviews for monitors (compared to say, video cards or motherboards), but this one seems to be decent?

Mouse, ?
I haven't had time to read much about mice, can anyone recommend some ideas here? I'm thinking £20/£30

Thanks in advance :)

Your build looks good you need low profile ram so it won't conflict with your heat sink you can get a 500-550W XFX,Corsair,Seasonic PSU that will leave you breathing room and OC room as for what brand 7850 i recommend Asus or MSI as for mouse sorry bud i just use any i don't really know what's good and not good although recently my cousin gave me a RAZER DeathAdder i like it allot lol

try to find any of this ram it will be compatible with your aftermarket heat sink RAM:G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR

Any of these kind would also work if you can't find any of the others i mentioned RAM:G.SKILL Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C9D-8GAB

Fractal have just released a revision of the R3; the R4http://www.fractal-design.com/?view=product&category=2&prod=100 which is improved in many ways and should be the same price as the R3. I'd recommend waiting for that if you can.

With the Hyper 212 Evo, yes you will need low profile RAM. I recommend this:
Crucial Ballistix Sports 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz CAS9 1.5V BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU (£36 @ Amazon)
http://skinflint.co.uk/723497

The version of the Hyper 212 Evo sold in the UK/EU has a fan speed range of 600-1600RPM, unlike the version sold in the US, which has a maximum speed of 2000RPM. This is an improvement if you want a quiet build.
However I personally would buy a number of other coolers for a quiet build before I'd buy the Evo.

Thermalright True Spirit 120 (£25 @ Amazon)
http://skinflint.co.uk/678221
Speed range of 1000-1500RPM, so the minimum speed is fairly bad. But it does outperform the Evo. It would be more advantageous to put a better fan on this compared to the Evo, IMO.

At higher price points these coolers are good for quiet coolers:
Deep Cool Ice Matrix 400 (£30 @ QuietPC / £31 @ Amazon)
http://skinflint.co.uk/576422
Fan speed range: 500-1500RPM.

Alpenfohn Matterhorn Pure (£30 @ OCUK)
http://skinflint.co.uk/782372
Fan speed range: 500-1500RPM.

Deep Cool Ice Warrior (£36 @ QuietPC / £40 @ Amazon)
http://skinflint.co.uk/576694
Fan speed range: 500-1500RPM.

Scythe Ninja 3 (£40 @ OCUK / QuietPC / Amazon)
http://skinflint.co.uk/709890
Fan speed range: 470-1340/740-1900RPM.

Thermalright HR-02 Macho (£40 @ OCUK)
http://skinflint.co.uk/664436
Fan speed range: 900-1300RPM.

The Corsair TX650 V2 uses a fan which has a fan speed range of 1000-2800RPM. So not a particularly good choice for a quiet PSU IMO, even if the fan is fairly high quality.

You don't need as much as 650W for a build with a single 7850, so you can get a lower wattage unit, which is either quieter and the same price or cheaper.
Antec High Current Gamer HCG-520M £56
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/520w-antec-high-current-gamer-hybrid-modular-87-eff-80-plus-bronze-eps-12v-135mm-silent-fan-atx12v-v
Fan speed range of 600-1800RPM.

Antec Truepower New TP-550 (£65 @ Ebuyer)
http://skinflint.co.uk/407696
Fan speed range of 800-1800RPM.

NZXT Hale90 550W (£79)
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-nzxt-hale90550s-92-eff-80-plus-gold-sli-crossfire-eps-12v-quiet-fan-atx-v22-psu
Fan idles around 700RPM. If you really push it, it might spin as fast as 1200RPM. But normally does not go above 1000RPM.

For the graphics card I would look at the Gigabyte GV-R785OC-2GD because it has one of the highest factory overclocks out of any 7850 on the market atm, it has one of the best coolers and it is a good competitive price.

@ bigcyco1, thanks for all the RAM advice. i should be able to get some low profile Vengeance RAM easily enough

@ Silvune, thanks for the news about the R4. from the reviews I've read you definitely right, I'll try to wait for it. Not too sure when exactly its coming out - though I've found one website which has it on pre-order.
Also thanks for the CPU Cooler and PSU advice, I'll do some more reading this morning and come back

So I'm now thinking:

CPU, Intel Core i5-3570K
CPU Cooler, Alpenfohn Matterhorn Pure
Motherboard, Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H (ATX)
Video Card, AMD Radeon HD7850
Memory, Corsair Vengeance Low Profile, 2x4GB
Storage
1) Samsung 830 Series 128GB 2.5” SDD
2)Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5” HDD
Optical Drive, Sony AD-7261S-0B DVD/CD Writer (or any other decent drive)
Case, Fractal Design Define R3 or R4 if I can get it
Power supply, Antec High Current Gamer HCG-520M
OS, Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Monitor, Dell UltraSharp U2312HM 23" (still might do some more reading on monitors)
Mouse, something relatively cheap - still looking around but I'm not that fussed

cheers people
