Mid-range build £800

Hi guys,

Helping a friend put together a system. He's looking to spend around £800, doesn't need a monitor, keyboard or mouse. After doing a bit of reading around I've come up with this tentative list, any opinions would be welcome.

CPU: Intel Core i7 860

RAM: Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz

GFX: MSI GTX 460 HAWK OC Edition 1GB

HDD: Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB

PSU: Corsair 650W TX

Case: Antec 900

DVD: Samsung SH-S223

CPU fan: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro

Thanks in advance.

  1. ^ If it will be a gaming build, then drop the CPU to i5 760, and upgrade the mobo to P7P55D-E Pro which supports SLI, would allow the option to add 1 more GTX 460 later on...

And get this PSU - Is modular and has required power connectors for 2x GTX 460s
  2. any specific reason you went for the msi hawk gtx460? for a few quid more you can get a sapphire HD5850.

you could save some money by buying from scan.

    heres the i5 760 for £146.

    heres a Asus P7P55D EVO Intel P55 Express 1156 Motherboard for £132.

    if you want a gtx460 heres a msi cyclone gtx 460 1GB for £170.

or theres a slightly cheaper gigabyte gtx 460 1gb OC for £164.

  3. I am with *the philosophy* of infernox - GTX 460 is of course a great GPU at its price range.....if u tight for $$ for a gaming config that is. 800 quid u could easily hit a HD 5870
  4. 775 quid with a nice Noctua cooler in
  5. If you plan on going with 2 cards in the future I rate the GTX460 as a better choice than the 5850.

Having said that, if you can afford a 5870 or GTX470 in the build then I would seriously consider them
