How do I darken the black on a hps2031 monitor

I have a new Dell computer with an HP S2031 monitor running windows 7 and the black text on the screen it so light. I have tried all the adjustments on the monitor and I can not seem to be able to darken the black.

Can anyone help me with this?

If turning down the brightness (or backlight control if available) doesn't darken the black, how much ambient light do you have around the monitor? Also, are you connecting the monitor with a VGA cable (as opposed to DVI), running at non-native resolution, or using greyscale font smoothing (as opposed to subpixel font smoothing)?
