Hi my name is Adam AKA xHotheaded or Hothead I am 14 years old, from the UK and recently got interested in building my own desktop (This is my first time doing this sort of thing). Obviously being 14 I am strapped for cash so £500 is the absolute max I can afford. I haven’t decided on an OS yet but I know they’re expensive and will have to take this into account so technically I have around £400 ($616) for the hardware.

First of all I will be mainly browsing the web, watching HD YouTube videos and some light video editing with Sony Vegas or other editing programs. So obviously I don’t want to go overboard with the Video Card. I will be using http://www.scan.co.uk/ I would like a moderately-quiet pc if I can get one for this price but it isn’t too much of an issue.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Late June/Early July ’10.
BUDGET RANGE: £400-500
SYSTEM USAGE FROM LEAST IMPORTANT TO MOST IMPORTANT: HD YouTube Videos, Web Browsing, Light Video Editing (Sony Vegas etc.).
PARTS NOT REQUIRED: Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor, Speakers.
PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: www.scan.co.uk
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Wales, UK.
OVERCLOCKING: Maybe. I have never done it before so I don’t know if it is worth it.
MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1152x864.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: The quiter the better but not really required.

After a couple of days scanning this sites reviews and many others on different pieces of hardware I have come up with a rough estimate of what components I need/want:

CPU – AMD Athlon II X4 630 http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AMD-Athlon-II-X4-630-Quad-Core-S-AM3-28GHz-2MB-Cache-HT-4000MHz-95W-Retail
Mobo – Asus AMD 785G http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-M4A785TD-M-EVO
RAM – Corsair 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-%282x2GB%29-Corsair-DDR3-PC3-10666-%281333%29-Non-ECC-Unbuffered-CAS-9-9-9-24-150V
Case – Zalman Z7 ATX Mid Tower http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Zalman-Z7-%28Standard%29-ATX-Mid-Tower-PC-Case
PSU – Corsair 550W http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/550W-Corsair-CMPSU-550VXUK-ATX-PS-2-5-year-Warranty
GPU – Radeon HD 4650 http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-Gigabyte-HD-4650-PCI-E-20-%28x16%29-800MHz-GDDR2-GPU-650MHz-320-Cores-D-Sub-DL-DVI-I-HDMI
HDD – Samsung 500 GB T166 (I probably don’t need this much.). http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/500-GB-Samsung-HD501LJ-Spinpoint-T166-SATA-II-7200-rpm-16MB-Cache-89-ms-NCQ
OS – Windows 7 64-bit.

This comes to around £420 without the OS.

I will not being a keyboard, mouse, monitor or speakers with this as I will be broke but I will be upgrading once I get some more money. My current monitor has a resolution of 1152x864.

I have a few questions to ask.

Do I need Windows 7 or can I get by using XP?
Should I get RAM for 32 or 64 bit?
Can I get XP on my new computer if it is on my current computer? If so how?

All help is appreciated and considerated obviously the main aim is to get a really low price, long lasting and easily upgradable computer that would suit my needs but I obviously don’t have the experience to do it on my own.

Thanks for the help in advance!

if you getting a new motherboard you gonna have to get a new os unless you bought a retail version of xp that can be moved from machine to machine

64 bit is the future

MS gonna stop support for xp in a few months

win7 pro has an Xp mode

Can I get a discount by upgrading to Windows 7 if I don't have the disc then? Still haven't had time to look and see if I have a disk.

if you are not going to play games, you could surf the web, watch youtube, edit videos and more with ubuntu . It's different from windows, but it's free :). Download a live cd and try it out.

Sorry for the double post but I want to bump this thread as I still don't have the answers I need.

Cheers.

Edit: I am looking at the Athlon II X3 435 and the Athlon II X2 250 which one do you think suits my needs better?
