and if he wants a better processor ? intel has stopped making core 2 desktop processors and where will a dual core beat a triple core in general usage ? and multithreaded applications and gaming?

Faster dual is better with a lot of games than a triple. Neither option is really worth upgrading with, but still possible. Intel is better clock for clock than AMD and the C2D can OC better.

Passmark - His AMD = 2445/3 = 815 C2D E7500 = 1995/2 = 997.5

Can get the E7500 for £83.24

the am3 board will accept any am3 cpu from an athlon 215 to an amd phenomx4 965 and the phenom x6 is slotted for the am3 platform and where does socket 775 come in ? and a fast dual core will choke when muliticore optimized games become more prominent no matter how fast the dual core is

That was the evidence for my advice.

I'd rather save on the mobo and get a better CPU.

Otherwise I like your choices.

Ebuyer prices are not bad. Try google product search, but ofc is preferable to buy all from the same place. I've got from ebuyer before and they are fast etc. Once the delivery tracking from parcel force changed to tried to deliver even though I was completely certain they hadn't been. Rang ebuyer and they rang their contact at parcel force, and as a major client they told them it wasn't good enough and they had better sort it out, which they did within an hour. So I like ebuyer.
