Sorry for such a long first post, just wondering which one is 'better' for my needs. Any changes welcome. I'm thinking of scrapping the 2 HDD idea in the first build and using the Samsung from the second with the £75 saved going towards upgraded graphics or better RAM or just having it as a saving.

You don't need a quad for those tasks. A dualie or tri cores will do.

ADX425WFGIBOX - AMD Athlon II X3 425, Triple Core, Rana, S AM3, 2.7GHz, 1.5MB Cache, HT 2000MHz, 95W, Retail
£55.28 Inc VAT

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AMD-Athlon-II-X3-425-Tri...

And you may be able to unlock the 4th core in the X3:

Or if you must have a core, this is a good budget one:

ADX620WFGIBOX - AMD Athlon II X4 620, Quad Core, S AM3, 2.6GHz, 2MB Cache, HT 4000MHz, 95W, Retail
£72.43 Inc VAT

The rest of the parts are ok.
