3D-ready Monitor at 120Hz

There are 120Hz 3D monitors out there, though I was wondering if they run games at 120Hz refresh rates when you don't turn on the 3D option in the game and don't use glasses (2D).

Basically, can I get 120Hz refresh rates out of one of these monitors in 2D-gaming mode?

The reason I ask is the listed vertical refresh rate for the Asus VG236H 23" 2ms 1920x1080 Full HD 120Hz 3D monitor ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236092&cm_re=120hz_monitor-_-24-236-092-_-Product ) on newegg is:

Analog: 50 - 122 Hz
Digital: 50 - 85 Hz

Does that mean I'll only get 85Hz at most from this monitor using a DVI cable while getting higher refresh rates from a VGA cable (122Hz)?

Where does the 120Hz come into play?

This is confusing. I'm looking to get something that can match my frame rates which are well above the 60Hz of my current monitor. Please help me understand this.

  1. Monitor refresh rate is not affected by what type of gaming your doing. If your gaming in 2D or 3D, regardless, it will refresh at 120Hz always. It also smooths out movies, but is not always preferred by some who enjoy the movie for what it already was, some movies we're meant to have stuttering. It was written quite awhile back, when the new technology was just hitting the shelves, but none the less it still provides useful information for your situation.

    Hope this helped!

  2. If this is the case, why does the vertical refresh rate in the specs for this monitor list as follows?:

    Analog: 50 - 122 Hz
    Digital: 50 - 85 Hz

That's totally inconsistent with the 120Hz claim. Unless you use the VGA connector? And that must be only at certain resolutions.
  3. Does anyone have one of these monitors? Will I be able to set set the res/refresh rate to 1080p at 120Hz in Windows?
  4. I didn't really get the answer I was seeking here. Going to post under graphics and displays.
