Monitor Recommendations 24" +

Hello,

I've interested in purchasing a new Monitor, ideally between £200 and £300, 24" or more and preferably with a resolution of 1920 x 1200. The main use of the monitor will be gaming with a little bit of web browsing here and there. At the moment I'm playing BBC2, Mafia 2, WoW, Mass Effect 1 & 2, Starcraft 2 and a few others.
I've searched, read reviews and really can't make up my mind on what to get. I have a shortlist which changes every other day, but at the moment I'm looking at the following:

Benq XL2410T 120hz 24" 1920 x 1080 (not the resolution I'm looking for, but 120Hz seems to be a strong selling point for 1st person shooters)

Iiyama ProLite E2607WS 26" 1920 x 1200 (reviews seem semi decent and it's cheap for such a large monitor)

Dell UltraSharp U2410 24" 1920 x 1200 (I've seen this for £325 on ebay for a refurbished model, slightly out with my budget, but people on here seem to rave about them)

Dell Ultrasharp U2311H 23" 1920 x 1080 (smaller and with less resolution then I'd like, be again people seem to like these)

I'd also consider anything else.

Does anyone have any experience with the above or can they recommend something similar that they use and found to be good? I’m considering purchasing another 2 further down the line to set up Eyefinity.

The BenQ is a TN panel (lower quality) and has an LED backlight (which can give a blue tinge to the screen). 120Hz in a monitor is mainly useful if you actually use the 3d shutter glasses (personally, I think switching between the different eye images is the wrong way to do it). The Iiyama is also a TN panel. The U2311H is IPS, but like you said, has lower resolution. The U2410 is H-IPS and 1920x1200, but personally I try to avoid refurbished monitors.

I suggest the HP ZR24W - S-IPS, 1920x1200, good review at TFT Central, £320 inc VAT:

1920x1200 monitors will be more expensive than 1920x1080 monitors. the extra 120 pixels in height will not matter one bit.

you do not need 120hz to play games. 60hz is fine. 120hz is for a 3d signal which i doubt you will be looking to use as monitors meant for this are much more expensive typically

the deal with response times is similar. you dont need a 2-5ms monitor to play games. anything that responds under 16ms shouldnt lag.

iiyama... sounds like an off brand. might be substandard quality, you'd have to research them.

Dell does make a good monitor. Just research the model to make sure it doesnt have backlight bleed as some of their monitors do. Viewsonic also makes very nice monitors. give them a look.

for eyefinity... you might want to see if you can get a monitor that supports 90 degree rotation as for some games the monitors look better in portrait mode so you dont have to play in ultra-ultra-widescreen.

The extra 120 rows of pixels makes a difference especially for surfing and reading documents.

Response time and lag are different. Generally speaking lower response times means less ghosting where as lag refers to the time it takes for actions to be displayed on the screen. Manufacturer specs do not list lag.

£300 is a bit low for a 1920 x 1200 monitor so you may need to get a 1920 x 1080 monitor.
