Are these good monitors for gaming?

three i am thinking about getting are 27 inch 1920x1080res. things I don't understand tho (monitor noob) are backlight and Contrast Ratio. I think, from what i read that backlight is eco-friendly(at the cost of image) and contrast ratio is image quality. is that right? I also think i want to get a monitor with the lowest response time I can. now, this will be used for fps gaming>internet surfing>watching movies. would these 3 monitors be a good choice or should I get 23-24 inch instead of a 27? right now I am useing an old hp 22 inch 1600x1050 monitor and looking for an ungrade(want to give my dad this one). my budge is under 400.

I was planning on getting a 3d monitor but after hearing how much performence loss i would get in games I decided against it. although the 120 refresh rate does still seem like something I might want to get anyhow. so what do you all think? for a gaming monitor would I be better off with a 23.6 3d(120 refresh rate) monitor, 24 inch monitor or 27 inch? and what contrast rateing should I try to get?

Backlight - There are two types. Traditional compact cold florescent light (CCFL) and LED. CCFL is a full array across the entire back of the monitor. LED is newer and typically uses edge lighting; the light is emitted from the edges of the monitor into an amorphis material that reflects the light to the viewer(s). LED uses less electricity because of this.

Contrast Ratio - Basically used to see color tones. Setting it too low makes very thing greyish and muddied. Set too high you loose a lot of color gradients (shades). Monitors have two Contrast Ratios; Static and Dynamic. Static Contrast Ratio is the more important of the two and typically ranges between 700:1 and 1000:1.

Image and color quality is dependant on the LCD panel type. TN being the cheapes and lowest quality to PVA and IPS panel being more expensive, but generally much better quality; most highend (expensive) monitors uses H-IPS panels.


Your Dell link does not work and it's always good to actually identify the exact model. I don't really like clicking links to find out which product people are interested in.

The Asus and Samsung monitors you have selected are both TN panel monitors which is why they are pretty inexpensive.

The Samsung 27" was big and beautiful, but it either hurt my eyes, or when I turned down the brightness I couldn't see shadow detail hardly at all. Be carefull of that if you are going to sit close to it.

Also, don't buy from newegg, amazon return policy is much better for monitors.

After returning 3 TN monitors ~ 2 samsung, 1 Asus, I bought the DellU2311H (this is e-IPS panel) and I love it.

i always buy from amazon, because they don't charge taxes in TN & free s&h. always use newegg to browse mostly.
still don't know if I should get a 23" 3d ready monitor(for 120 refresh rate & 3d movies) or get a normal 24/27" monitor. ty for your help so far guys

in my opinion, resolution matters more than physical size.

Unless you are getting a 2560x1440 resolution 27" screen, sticking with something 24" or 23" is more or less the same thing. You should look into 120Hz if ou like video gaming and your computer is up to the stuff.

As for 3D movies, they are overrated. Its not that immersive at 23". Not to mention you lose so much picture quality, colors, contrast, everything to those glasses.

You would appreciate 120Hz gaming though. The smoothness is amazing.

I like those ips panel ones but will they be okay for fps shooters? for the same price as the 24 ips i can get a 3d monitor or get a 27 tn. hard choice =(

Well I was playing Battlefield bad company 2 earlier, and I got a kill/death ratio of about 27/5 in my last game.
So, for an IPS panel I'd say its fast enough to shoot people in the head with my pistol
Like I said before, e-IPS much better picture quality, lag isn't slowing me down ~ I don't even notice it. Seriously, I pin people in the head in FPS games all the time... Plenty fast for me. If any you guys wanna jump in a squad with me in BFBC2 Let me know and we can game some ^^

Between 3D monitors. The Asus is definitely one of the best. I will choose it over the Acer.

I play BC2 or used to play. I am playing a lot of fallout vegas and starcraft right now. I have a KDR of 2.89 in BC2. I don't even use 120hz or 2ms TN panels.
