You don't need 3GB... 1 is enough my friend...

At the max resolution of your screen (1366x768) it will make an adequate gaming machine but not a great gaming machine. You will struggle with the screen size with art design and 3d modeling since it is so low. If the screen resolution was 1920x x1080 the 555M would be inadequate for gaming although better for art design and 3d modeling.

3GB of VRAM for 1366x768 resolution is overkill.

You don't need 1GB of VRAM until you hit 1920x1080.

3GB is a marketing ploy on anything but the fastest mobile video cards. The 555 can game well enough at 1366x768, a resolution that does not need 3GB of RAM. At 1920x1080, the 555M does not have the performance to play games adequately at that resolution and giving it more RAM than 1GB is irrelevant but the marketing folks think it will sell more cards or laptops in this case, if people believe they will get an advantage by having it since it is what they have heard in the past.

So yes, 3GB is a waste on a 555M but does not matter since he does not have a choice to change it. That is how they are sold.

Everyone keeps mentioning the screen size and resolution. I plan on hooking it up to my 23" lcd HD IPS panel tv. So does this change or is the 3gb still useless? I have the option to change it to 1.5.

As I mentioned, you don't really need 1GB of VRAM until you hit 1080p or higher.

The GT 555M should allow you to play most games at medium quality graphics if you are using 1920x1080 resolution and if the game is not graphically intensive.

Example, Crysis 2 + DX11 & ultra resolution texture pack is probably playable at low settings. BF3? Probably a mix of low and medium graphic settings.
