Hi, I wonder if someone could help a complete novice choose a laptop. The main usage is very basic: I would like Windows 7; I use Microsoft Office a lot for my business and have different applications running concurrently; would like as much RAM as possible(4GB?); as big a hard drive as poss (250GB?). Apart from business applications I will use mobile broadband for emails and to pull information from the web (so WiFi might be an advantage?); I would play and burn DVDs/CDs; watch internet TV and download my photos. It will not be used for gaming and, although I will play music, watch films etc and use it for my photos, these will be incidental on this laptop so I do not need high spec for those activities. Having read loads of reviews, I was looking at the Acer Aspire 5520 but then read conflicting reports and am now confused all over again. Can anyone help?

Confused in what way? You're better off with a Dell I think, as they can provide the specs at the price you're looking for, especially now that it's Black Friday in the US. Not sure if the maker sells in the UK, or if they apply the same sort of promos.

Where do you plan to shop for your laptop? Misco.co.uk?

Well from what you said and your price range is i would suggest either the
Asus X5DIJ at argos for £399.99 http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5082267/Trail/searchtext%3ELAPTOPS.htm
or the Acer Aspire 5732 at ebuyer.com for £379.99 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/172314
both of them are pretty much the same the acer has a slightly better CPU but you most probably notice it. the only thing that separates them is the make. Asus has better build quality and reliability than acer so it would be worth spending the extra £20 for the asus hope this helps
