Solved Forum question

hdmi out on lcd(audio+video)
i am using mercury pig 31 u mobo with ati radeon hd 2600 pro gfx card. i tried to connect my sharp lcd using dvi to hdmi connector but all i can get is video but no audio through my lcd.
In sound settings it says amd high definition audio device not plugged in. i already upated all drivers with amd site. pls help!!!

k... so ati radeon hd 2600 pro does produce audio out...

HDMI carries audio, DVI does not. In fact, that is the biggest difference between the two. Some newer graphics cards can output audio through DVI if you use a DVI => HDMI converter, but that is not guaranteed to work. I guess your card doesn't do that.

EDIT: After digging around, it seems Nvidia 200 and up or AMD 3000 and up can do that with certain models. It works by sending audio through unused DVI pins (analog, probably), combined with a specific adapter that comes with the card. That adapter will route the audio channels into the proper HDMI pins. It only seems to do stereo, though.

Your best solution would be to use a second cable for audio.

DVI doesn't transmit sound. You have to use an HDMI cable (that has an HDMI connector on both ends) to get sound.
