The 290 is the better card, though they tend to run rather warm, so will want good cooling, I lean to the Asus CU cooling design, works well with all the different GPUs, I have a pair of their 780's in SLI, OCed about 25% and still run cool and nice

The Sapphire Tri-X 290 runs pretty cool actually (and also has 3 fans)

But seriously, it's all about what resolution you will be gaming on and if you ever want to add a second card. The 290 has a huge advantage in ultra high res monitors like 1440p, 1600p, or 5760x1080p, and the 290 has an even bigger advantage in a 2 card setup over the 770 or even the 780.

But in a single 1080p monitor, the 770 is almost as good, and would be the smarter buy IMO.

i have a gigabyte gtx 770 and i am excited with it..i play all games(battlefield 4,assassins creed iv black flag)ultra settins at a resolution 1080p and i don't go lower than 60 fps..nvidia is far better than amd don't think about it,amd get high temperatures,i recommend you the gigabyte's version with 3 radiators http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Depends on what you will be gaming on, and if you would have to cut back on something else in order to fit the 290 in your budget.

The 290 is better for sure, but if you are just going to be gaming on a single 1080p monitor, I would go with the 770.
