Storage reorganizeation; does this work?
Hi guys

So I want to reorganize my storage situation. basically all my data (primary copy, I do have back-ups) is sitting in a RAID 10 array in my main rig. and I would like to move to an mini-ITX gaming rig, and offload the data to a Synology unit I just bought to have a more energy efficient home media server. so what I want to know is this:

I have 4 x 3TB drives in my RAID 10 array. can I move the majority of the data to the server, then 'break' off one of the drives in the array via the software. make it a separate drive, mirror / clone the rest of the drive onto this single drive, then break apart the rest of the array? the main reason I want to do this is because I made the mistake of installing some software onto the array as well (my SSD was running out of space), and I don't want to go through the trouble of re-installing stuff right at this moment

I guess I can answer this myself now... This is apparently possible, and do-able even from the BIOS. I simply forced one drive out of the array in BIOS, then re-formatted it, and then used a disc-cloning software to clone the data on the array onto the newly formatted disc. then I took down the whole array

as always, back up your data before you attempt something like this
