Help! Monitor now recognized as general non PnP Monitor
I have had a new PC for the past 4 months, with a gtx 770 an i7 4770, using an Acer G246HL 60Hz at 1920x1080. I had been using it like this last night, however i came on today and it was at 1024x768 and there was no option for 1920x1080 on either the screen resolution page or nvidia control panel. I also noticed that in device managers my monitor name is not there and is recognized as general non PnP monitor. I have gotten drivers for the monitor and re-installed the drivers for the graphics card with no luck. Please any help would be fantastic at this point

this situation confuses me though, as the port still displays an image, its just that the PC doesn't recognize the monitor any longer through the HDMI port, so i am now using the DVG port on my card, which still recognizes the monitor.

So it leaves me in a tight spot, is it a hardware problem? could it have been a bug with the latest driver? It is a very very peculiar problem which i cannot find elsewhere online.

Late to the party i know, but Im having exactly the same problem. I have a DVI port (no VGA), but my monitor is VGA only, so i used a DVI to VGA adapter on my PC and a 6' VGA cord. i just upgraded to a 25 ' cord. I plugged the new 25' in, and my monitor showed up as 'generic pnp monitor' with a max resolution of 1024x768. I rebooted, checked drivers, checked device in windows and nvidia, but nothing. I made a custom resolution in Nvidia, but it was all blurry and hard to look at. I thought I would check the 6' to see if it was the long cable, and the 6' worked fine. Normal resolution (1600 by 900), and windows recognized my monitor by name. Switched them back, and it was back to locked out of resolution, but instead of generic pnp it reads 'display device on: VGA', but otherwise acts as the generic pnp ~ locked at 1024x768.

I understand troubleshooting enough to know there's obviously something wrong with the cable, but I am utterly unable to understand how a cord can show a perfect picture, but cause a driver issue to the point where the monitor isn't recognized. It doesnt make any sense to me either.

I really don't know. I have a MX239H and about 6 months ago, it didn't show anything. So I simply connected my monitor with a different HDMI port on the monitor and it worked again. It seemed that one of my monitor HDMI port had died :)

Glad that I could help :)

Would there be any reason why the HDMI port has suddenly stopped recognizing the monitor and calls it a Generic non PnP Monitor?

Ok i am using a vga to dvi adapter which has made it recognize the monitor. Why would two HDMI cables suddenly not recognize the monitor but still display an image on it? However i now have the problem of having a black bar down the side of the screen as the ratio is off.

EDIT: Managed to fix the ratio, Shostakovich Teddy picked as best solution

Just like other things, cables can have problems over time. So I think we need to eliminate the reasons for your problem. Does the same problem occur when you use another monitor (if you have a spare one) or when you connect the Acer monitor to another computer? You could also try to plug the cable to other hdmi port on your monitor and also plug to other hdmi port of the graphic card.

I have been using a HDMI cable, i have tried another HDMI cable and the same problem occurs. But i have been using a HDMI cable since i got the PC, so i do not understand why it will not work.

The problem might come from the cable. Which kind of cable are you using? HDMI or VGA or DisplayPort? Have you tried to connect your monitor with another cable?
