Please recommend a storage configuration
I have recently been scouted and hired for an international company. They required a laptop to be mandatory for the position. As I will be doing PHP programming, I have decided to buy the entry level Lenovo G510 (i3 4000 2.4ghz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 6-cell) for $446 against Dell Inspiron 3521 (i3 3217u 1.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 4-cell) at $434.

I can't change the configuration or order a custom configuration for any modals here in Pakistan. As I have a SSD equipped PC at home, I can easily see the expected gap in performance.

Would you recommend that I replace the internal HDD with a 120GB SSD?
Will attaching that internal HDD as an external HDD be better or should I sell that and buy a bigger n better SSD and use that for both OS and Storage?

P.S. I hate laptops, I destroy them so most likely I will not be using it for anything else, other than work.

Unless you're severely irritated by having to wait a few more seconds for the thing to boot and for programs to load, text documents and presentations really don't require an SSD. Of course, if you want it to "just work fast all the time", by the SSD and save yourself a the irritation of an update bringing your system to a crawl.

You will certainly notice the performance improvement of the internal SSD. Make sure you create a recovery disk so you can restore the IBM software and drivers to the SSD.

As for using the old drive as external - sure - there are many USB external enclosures for USD $16 and up and it is a nice and handy backup. Or sell it. You know best what you'd want to do.
