Connect to a usb storage through my VPN
I recently bought the ASUS ac68u router and enabled a VPN on it.
Additionally I have connected an external drive to it (2tb) so I can access my data from anywhere.

However, I am about to go on a holiday where I will have only access to a slow speed connection and sadly for me, even during holiday I will be forced to do some work.
For my work I often need to download small or really large files and upload those elsewhere.

So, what I was hoping to do was connect to my VPN from my holiday location and browse the internet through the VPN. When needed I want to save a file on my connected USB drive and than upload it from there (I run filezilla on the USB harddrive).
(all this without my PC being on!!)

However, no matter what I try I seem to be unable to do this and I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or wether its just not possible.
Here is some info:
- the VPN works. I can access it and browse the intenret
- the USB storage I can view and browse the folders
- my account has read/write access to the USB storage
- on my PC I can access the USB storage just fine and browse the folders and run filezilla....remotly it does not work
- on the router I enabled an FTP server too and I can connect to it and do all things you normally do over FTP (so read/write works just fine).

But I can not browse the internet and save a file to my usb storage for some reason.

Does anyone here have any experience with this? Any idea what I am doing wrong?
I really hope someone knows how I can do this otherwise I wont have much of a holiday as I will need to work and down/upload file during a day..... :(
