This about sums up that AMD has bad IPC compared to Intel. And this is compared to older gen Intel CPUs... The IPC on the 4th gen ones is even better.

Not the best benchmarks, but they get the point across.

@AMDRadeonHD, there is a fps difference with a 100Mhz clock difference... It's marginal though. In most applications 100Mhz wouldn't make a huge difference, but there is a difference.

@Lukaboki, What... If the i5 was worse single threaded than the fx8350, then the 8350 should win in gaming, which it doesn't.

The fx series doesn't suck at it's single thread, otherwise games would perform horribly on it. Of course it all depends on how well optimized it is. If it uses multiple cores, it'll perform decently. The fx series shines a bit more on the multithreading and multitasking side of things. If you're doing productivity stuff like rendering or video editing, then between the i5 and fx 8350, the 8350 would perform slightly better.

Not overclocking = i5 4460
Overclocking = i5 4690K
That's the best solution, waste of money for 0.1, 0.2 or 0.3Ghz more, no FPS difference.

Not sure if that's a typo, but the FX series sucks at single threaded tasks compared to Intel. The FX series only beats the i5 when using 6+ cores.

Would the amd fx 9370 be better than I5 4690?

If gaming, the i5 is better. If doing heavy multi-threaded tasks (video rendering, file converting, design software, etc...) go for the FX 8350. There is a lot of people saying AM3+ is a dead socket and the FX series sucks because it's old and has bad IPC, and that's true, but if on a strict budget, the FX 8350 has better overall price/performance, also the FX series also has cheaper high quality mobos compared to LGA1550 mobos, where you need to spend $200 to get a high end mobo.. Just be aware if you ever want to upgrade your CPU from the 8350, you will need to buy a new mobo, since the 8350 is the end of the AM3+. The FX 9000 series is just garbage... basically power hungry factory OC'ed 8350s. If you can afford it, get the i5 4690. Also right now, the i5 4690k is on sale and is only a few $ more expensive and allows for OC'ing. But you will need a more expensive mobo to OC the 4690k.

But is it worth the price?

What will you do with the computer ? if only gaming you could get a FX 8320, overclock it and get very good performance.

Yes.
The FX-8350 is better at single-threaded tasks, while the i5 is better for gaming.
Both are very similar, but the i5 draws less power, which means it is cooler when gaming.

Get the 4460, it should be cheaper. (Assuming it's available to you). The few extra Mhz wouldn't affect the game too much.

FX-8350 is comparable with sandy bridge I5 3570K for gaming. A 4690 would be better.

Coming from a FX-8350 owner. I did my homeworks when i bought this FX CPU. but it was in 2013 January. Back then a FX-8350 was 20 $ cheaper than a 3570K and perform almost as good. So i took AMD.

Now, a Haswell I5 such this 4690 is better.
