For gaming and nothing else what would give me the best punch per pound:
i5 4690K or FX 8320?

I had this same choice, after doing a lot of research the winner is easy. The I5 4690k. The AMD 8320 does have a history of overheating. The I5 4690k is just the safer and better option especially with a solid motherboard. I went with the ASRock Asus Exteme 6 Motherboard.

The 8320 does not overheat as long you replace the stock cooler. Also Asrock and ASUS are two different companies.

Yes but the price for performance ratio raises as the performance raises. 4690k is the way to go.

The i5-4690 is the more powerful CPU for gaming but the 8320 and 8350 are a better bang for your buck.

The i5-4690k wins this easy, just don't pick up a crappy motherboard!

I wouldn't want to put a FX8320 on a Biostar TA970 board. I would trust with ASUS or Gigabyte more than Biostar imo.

You could go for Intel build which is slightly over £250:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£164.00 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: MSI Z97-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£87.56 @ Scan.co.uk)
Total: £251.56
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This combo is overclockable once you got a decent aftermarket cpu cooler.

If you definetly not overclocking then:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor (£142.98 @ Scan.co.uk)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£66.91 @ More Computers)
Total: £209.89
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Note, if you change the motherboard, you may need another Window licence. If you have Window 8, you can transfer the licence to the new motherboard.

Depends on the rest of your budget and planned build. If you budget only allows an i5 4690k but not enough for a decent Z97 motherboard, you want another combo. If you get a FX8320 but with a crappy AMD motherboard, then no that is not a good idea.

What is your planned build?

It's gonna be a direct drop in upgrade for my current rig which is an FX 6100 on a Biostar TA970 board.
Budget wise am looking at £250
