I'm going off strong speculation here, but the AMD Radeon R9 390X series is not only going to knock 50 watts of the estimated TDP of the R9 290X, but it will boast a 20nm architecture, significantly more Stream Processing units, significantly more Texture Units, and way more ROPs than the current flagship we know and love. Also, I doubt they'll be sticking with that lousy reference cooler for much longer.
4k gaming is usually considered AAA graphically demanding titles. even a lowly dual core cpu and a 750ti could run league of legends at 4k easily. as far as single gpu 4k crysis 3 maxed out 60fps average, we are at least 2 years away from anything close to that.
gpus are not moving to more performance anyways, they are trending to low power consumption and smaller dies. gk110 and hawaii along with sandy bridge is likely the last big performance jump(25-50% higher than previous gen) we are going to see for a long time.

It's possible to do 4K on a single card, just not at uber settings, a single R 9 290X will handle 1080 or even dual 1080 screens with few issues.
IF the card is still unboxed AND you have a decent one kicking around AND the costs are reasonable (shipping, restocking) then you could return it and wait but bear in mind that it'll take a month or so for prices to realign and stabilise once Maxwell is released and don't expect dramatic price drops either, those days are over.
IF the card is installed returning it may be more difficult, not all vendors will accept the return of a good part for credit.
Or you could just accept that you have purchased one of the top cards currently available, one that will be churning out good frame rates for a few years to come and be happy in the knowledge that you made a sound decision on the day...Which in the world of PC hardware is all we can really do.

4k gaming is only doable with two 780/290s or above. it wont be a mainstream computer gaming resolution for at least another 2 years, though it wont stop people from throwing gobs of money to try to do it. i would just return it if your in a position to be patient and or you have a decent back up gpu to get you by until prices drop/new products come out.
