MSI GTX 760 and EVGA GTX 580 in SLI. Is it possible?
Hello,

I'm a student who studies 3D Animation. Currently I own an MSI GTX 760 Graphics card.
But, I saw some threads here which says GTX 580 is better than even a workstation graphics card. And it is really good for 3D Rendering. So, I'm going to buy a used EVGA GTX 580 Card from ebay.com. It will cost me about $210.
Is it worth buying?

Since I have a GTX 760 also, Can I use both graphics cards in SLI mode? But graphics cards are different brands.. MSI and EVGA.. Is it a problem?

I own a Cooler Master 750W Power Supply. Is it power enough to handle both these cards?

Since I'm still a student, I never render an animation using my GTX 760. Is GTX 760 enough for render an animation? Or is it better to spend $210 and buy GTX 580 also? Then rendering will speed at least 2X?

Other specs:-
Core i7 3770K.
16GB Gskill RAM
Asus Sabertooth Z77 mobo
750W power supply
2 HDDs and 2 DVD writers

the cuda architecture is totally different in fermi to kepler. it is well known that kepler is crippled in gpgpu compute performance. even amds midrange pitcairn architecture destroys kepler. cuda is the same, no appreciable performance increase to much worse. i would wait to see if maxwell has made strides, or at least caught back up to fermi.

Yes.. CUDA cores are higher in GTX 760. So, seems like keep using the GTX 760 is better.. Isn't it..?

900 series are for gamers i think, so a 580 might be okay but com[are the cude cores of the 760 and 580

Thanks for the detailed answer. Are you sure GTX 900 series will be better than GTX 580 when talking about 3D rendering. Because GTX 580 is better than lots of professional cards like AMD fire pro too.

I'm not a heavy gamer. I just play games a little. Main objetive is 3D rendering.

Thanks

I think the 760- is better for rendering, keep the 760 instead

Thanks for the answer.. Then Can I remove GTX 760 and add only GTX 580? Is GTX 580 Better than GTX 760 for 3D Rendering?

no, not possible.

to run sli(and crossfire), the graphics cards need to first be from the same architechure, then they need to have matching stats, same core processors, same tmus, same rops, etc. vram is one stat that does not need to be the same, though it would be better to have matching vram as to not gimped the card with higher vram.

the 580 in gaming is not really that much slower than the 760, and no doubt it is definitely better in compute than the 760. im not sure what your gaming needs are, but you might be happy with the 580 handling all your needs, though you should want a 3gb vram version of the 580 if you choose that. though $210 is rather steep for a gtx580. otherwise, trying to constantly swap card is going to be a pain. at this point you could sell your 760, and just get a higher tier card altogether. nvidia is going to be releasing their new generation mawell cards sometime this month and we will get card reviews soon. the gtx980/970/960... whatever cards end up on shelves soon, may be faster than the gtx580 in your 3d render compute needs, and no doubt faster than your 760 in gaming, and also be affordable to you. also, the gtx780 should drop in price too, so i would try to find the compute benchmarks for the program or programs you are using that compare the 580 to the 780.
