r9 290x and 290. if you can find a 290x for under 500 thats the best option. The gtx 780 is also good if you want nvidia. The gtx 780 ti is the best single gpu on the market and for 530 you can get the Asus DirectCU II. The 780 ti is amazing and if you dont mind spending 30$ more i'd get that one.is the gtx 780 much better then the Gigabyte R9 290 ?
They are honestly about the same, it depends on what games you are playing as to which one looks better at the time

do you mean three different options for under $500 or 3 graphics cards for $500? and which country is this for as well as it will make a huge difference 3 different graphic cards for under 500 in the states.
Here are the ones that I would go with in your case

I would recommend the gtx 770 or the gtx780.

Both are absolute beasts. They will no doubt eat up any game you throw at them. If you dont believe me, then read the reviews. To save money, I would go for the gtx 770. It will play every game ever made for pc on maximum settings. The gtx 780 is overkill in my opinion. Anyway, good luck finding the right card.
