Hey,

If I get the Intel Core i5-4690K does it only work with a Z97 chipset motherboard? or can I still use the Z87 chipset
It should work with any 1150 socket motherboard... Z97 is just a small improvement over the Z87... but it's basically the same... click the links for full details and see what i mean.

Some Z87 motherboard may need a BIOS update to run the latest Haswell i5's and i7's

Its smarter to buy a Z97 board IMO and avoid the hassle

The i5 4690K will work with that motherboard.

For future browsing, it is actually the socket size that you need to look at. The 1150 is for the 4000s (ex: i5 4690k or i7 4770k) and the 1155 is for the 3000s (ex: i5 3570k or i7 3770K).

Sorry if I am just giving you something that you already might know, but it seems like this website will help you quite a bit.

I recommend PCpartpicker.com to help you put together your first computer, it helps with compatibility issues, be it a part that will not fit hardware wise or just wont fit physically in your case due to size restrictions. It also helps with price trends as well as give less expensive alternatives for recklessly pricey items.

if its for gaming i would spend less on the cpu, (get an i5) and more on the gpu. You also putting in watercooling for a cpu that has a locked multiplier which is not necessary.
