I currently have a decent rig that I built just over a month ago, my first build. Now newegg decided to rub it in my face and reduce the price of the gpu that I bought (on sale at the time, even!) for their "overstock" sale, meaning for a limited time I could buy a second for a greatly reduced price.
I bought the card at 490$, it normally goes for 530$-ish, and it is currently being sold for 380$.
Can anybody tell me what I would gain from buying the second card?
And is my build able to handle a second one, even?
The sale in question: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
My build and cost:
Asus LGA Pro Wifi-ac Motherboard $210
8gb 2133mhz G Skill Sniper Series RAM $76.5
Intel core i7 4790k Haswell 4.0ghz w/ Arctic Silver 5 (Cooler Master 212 Plus) $340+$7+$35
250gb Samsung SSD + 2tb WD Green HDD $130+$90
EVGA Geforce GTX 780 FTW GPU $500
AX860 Corsair PSU $103
All in a Xion XON 985-bk Case $81

Ha, funny, the GTX 980 is right around the same performance increase as adding another GTX 780 in SLI.http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_9...
You're not helping =c
Well actually that kind of helps, now that I'm considering using the Step Up program-
Paying 80$ for an upgrade to one card is better than 380$ to get the same performance from two...
Hm. I guess you're just making me feel bad about my poor card I was so proud of. But thanks!
Either way those cards are overkill XD a 780 Maxes out games. but its good to opt-in for a higher 980 so that you can max out games longer

that Motherboard is able to SLI your cards together. Or you could get a 980, but either-or you will get great performance.I'd like to ask your opinion on that matter
The total cost of buying a second card for 380$ added onto my current card is about 870$, way more money than I intended to spend in the short term- I intended to buy a second card further down the road, when my card was "outdated".
However, I'm still qualified for EVGA's "Step Up" program, and they have the 980 listed.
It would cost me about 80$ plus shipping/tax to upgrade to their current 980.
Which do you believe would be more cost-effective in the long run? I do intend to game at 1080p on a 144hz monitor.

The mobo has 2PCI-E slots 8/8 in SLI .
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z97PROWiFi_ac/specific...
the PSU should be enough for SLI , it has six 6+2 pin power connectors
If you overclock a lot , you might need a greater PSU
i am not a fan of SLI
