there is a high chance that'll work, but it needs to fit ALL specifications, size, Socket ect. It also depends if you want to spend more money on this desktop, and if it is more worthwhile buying a new desktop later.

as said on other thread; HP use custom parts so putting in new parts are not guaranteed to work, it's not like your custom built desktop when you can replace things and it tends to work. Unfortunately, it is compatible spec wise but in terms of HP hardware it isn't. People have done this many times with other prebuilt desktops with similar scenarios.

If I was to take the CPU and Ram out, replace the board with another one, would that work. Is it that HP have thier own motherboards or is the CPU and RAM specific to them too?

Try leaving in your card and connect the monitor to your onboard video. See if it works. Look in your device manager to see if it detects the 8500. Load the drivers from your disk if you have a working monitor. Then go into you motherboard bios and change from Intel onboard graphics to your radeon card. Save and reboot.

Yes it is compatible. Does it need external power and if so did you connect the power. If you didn't the system will beep at you.
